October 16, 2004Our
first day in Seattle was overcast and rainy (surprise, surprise). However,
the foliage was spectacular and our hotel, the Mediterranean, had a
Starbucks attached, so I was stoked and ready to percolate. Mike took great
pleasure in watching the container ships unload and reload and unload some
more. Fascinating stuff. Needed a lot of caffeine to recover after that. We
rode to the top of the space needle and surveyed the city. Considered eating
at the restaurant, until we saw the meal would equal the cost of our hotel.
Instead, we ate some Pan-Asian cuisine by the waterfront at "Cilatro" and it
was fantastic. At first, I thought maybe it wasn't up to code, since we were
the only customers in the entire restaurant. Then I realized it was only
4:30, and we were still on Eastern time. Soon it was getting dark, and we
headed back to the Mediterranean. Mike suggested we go up on the roof to
take some night shots of the city. I said, "huh?" I thought the lack of
sleep and travel had affected his brain. Turns out, the Mediterranean has a
nice deck on the roof with chairs and everything. I'd very much recommend
it; they even upgraded our room because our original room smelled like
smoke. Thank you front desk!

Pike Place Market had it going on. The bushels of gorgeous
flower arrangements, the air pungent with delicious aromas, fish
flying through the air, street performers playing, and free samples
everywhere you turned. The jerky lady had Mike at "hello". He spent $24.00
on jerky, but this jerky was worth it. We are saving it for a special
occasion, like a bottle of fine wine. Say I get into optometry school, or
Mike gets a promotion-"Let's break out the jerky!!" Are we strange, or what?
